Nursery update/Weekend odds & ends

This weekend was hot, hot, hot here in North Carolina - 90+ temperatures and humid both Saturday and Sunday. Normally I love the heat, but this much this early in June sent me running for the comfort of my central air conditioning. Any real activity was relegated to the early morning hours where things were more manageable (85 degrees at 9 am is "manageable"?)

I got another coat of paint on the dresser/changing table that's currently living in our garage and then brought the drawers (which I swear will be the death of me...there are so many!!!) indoors for their 2nd coat. I love how it's looking but even with an initial coat of primer, I see 3, maybe 4 coats in my future!

Recall it looked like this when we first bought it. Post a good sanding with my new favorite power tool, the rotary sander, it looked like this:

After it's second coat of paint, it's looking more like this:

Fun right? I'm thinking of doing the routed detail and flower at the bottom in white when it's all said and done because I love the contrast in the sanded piece. A full before & after of this piece to come if I ever finish painting!

The abacus art that's going over the changing table also arrived, looking very un-abacus-y I must say.

But 20 minutes later things were looking up.

I love the way it looks and it's much sturdier than I ever expected, mounted on an iron frame. Though you'd never know it from this terrible iPhone photo, the beads are a fun, vibrant color which I think will look great in the room. It was promptly added to the ever growing "staging area" pile of stuff that will eventually make it's way into the room once we paint and assemble the closet.

I spy an assembled crib! (which won't fit through the door to the nursery without the door being removed from the hinges...whoops)

Saturday morning I headed to the Raleigh Flea Market for some good junk hunting. I only occasionally come home with anything but I love the whole process and potential treasures that a flea market holds.

I got their early to beat the heat but even at 9 am, everyone seemed to be moving in slow motion. I came across this little guy which made me giggle. I have no idea what I'd do with him or where he'd go but I thought he'd make an interesting sculptural piece painted in a bright color and perched on his polished brass ball (what a fun accessory in a circus-y type kid's room). Alas, I convinced myself he was way too random and left him behind.

One of my favorite vendors was there as always, holding court over his trailer of unique cast iron craziness. He's got everything from Popeye nutcrackers to interesting trellis frames & plant holders. I always stop and dig.

Eventually I headed inside to the look over the air conditioned stands. This is my least favorite area of the flea market but the air conditioning was too tempting! There I was greeted with my worst nightmare (no offense to any parents of triplets, I don't know how you do it!!)

The only thing that made it's way home with me this time was this $2 federal style convex mirror. I didn't exactly know where I'd put it but it's small enough that I thought I could tuck it somewhere easily.

A little white spray paint glammed it up and now it's looking much more modern and fresh. I think maybe I'll use it in Baby's room for a little added texture.

The rest of the weekend was spent lounging about, making excessive amounts of food (like these, this and this) and celebrating Daisy's 6th birthday! All in all, my favorite kind of weekend, I must say.
