Trying my hand at faux bois

If you follow me on Facebook, you already know that a couple of days ago I got my hands on my very own wood graining tool. I've been wanting to try my hand at a faux bois paint treatment for a while now but just never quite knew where or on what.

If you're not familiar with faux bois, it's French for "fake wood" and is essentially the art of creating a wood grain effect using paint or even cement in the case of furniture.

Some of my favorite faux bois inspirational images:

I finally caved and ordered my faux bois tool when I was debating how to jazz up 2 of the 4 walls in the dressing room I'm working on. I've decided to go the stenciling route rather than do a wood graining effect on the walls but that didn't stop me from testing this nifty little tool out!

Rather than mess up my walls, I used the poster board I had painted during swatch testing. This is actually the color I ended up going with on the walls - Martha Stewart Magnolia Grandiflora. I almost didn't go with it because it's so light it's virtually white but you won't believe how pink it looks on the walls. I'm really glad I didn't got any pinker!

I used my very minimal knowledge of the technique and applied a column of pearlescent white glaze then slowly rocked and dragged the tool down it. I got this.

I repeated those steps with the rest of the poster board.

Here's a closer view.

When I stepped back to look at the finished product I realized that less is definitely more. I felt inclined to rock the grainer at regular intervals but all that did was create a more static looking design. Less rocking, more dragging. I also think overlapping the tool so you're pulling slighting over the area you just did creates a better effect.

So overall I like the result but I definitely don't feel ready to go prime time with it all over a wall like this. I think it might be a little too subtle for what I'm looking for too. I'll be saving this tool for a fun little craft project like wrapping paper or the top of a little side table or something.
