These. Are. Simply. Amazing.

I was blessed to try these this past weekend at a potluck and they truly are amazing! I am putting the link here to bless all you lovely ladies who just LOVE chocolate---trust me, this one is a keeper and tastes incredible:

Peanut Butter Truffle Brownies

For the Brownies:
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
For the Peanut Butter Filling:
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 teaspoons milk
For the Ganache Topping:
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Butter the bottom and sides of a 9 by 13 inch metal baking pan. Put a long piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the pan, letting the parchment extend up two sides of the pan and overhang slightly on both ends. (This will make it easy to remove the bars from the pan after they have baked.) Butter the parchment.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Remove from heat and add the sugar; stir to combine. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined. Mix in cocoa, baking powder and salt. Add flour and stir until just combined and no streaks of dry ingredients remain. Pour into prepared pan and spread into an even layer. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Let cool completely in pan on a cooling rack.
  3. While the brownies are cooling, make the peanut butter filling. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the ingredients and beat until smooth. Add more milk if necessary to make it spreadable. Spread in an even layer over the brownies. Place in the refrigerator until filling is set, about 30 minutes.
  4. While the filling is setting, make the ganache, combine the ingredients in a double boiler or in a microwave safe bowl. Melt together and combine. Pour the ganache over the top and spread gently. Return to the fridge until set.

Spring Is Here! Decluttering the Large Family

I am so happy that spring is finally here! The longer days, the birds singing, new life budding their heads in the garden, the fresh air----oh, what is there NOT to love about spring?

I have been getting around to spring cleaning, running around the house like a mad woman with trash bags and asking myself one key question:

"Do I want to take care of this for the next 10 years?"

Ha! That got things going pretty quickly! Let me just say I threw away bags and bags of things that I no longer had interest in or wanted to take care of. I remember as a young wife I was busy trying to do the opposite-- to collect items for our home and to fill it.... or even being sentimental about certain items that I though I could not part with,--but now I am more than willing to give/throw them away today! Why? Because in order to live a more simpler life that is rich with true living I can't confine myself to caring for alot of material possessions which actually take away from the real living that I desire to do!

I think having alot of things can imprison a person to some degree. American's have so much, we really need to teach our children the value of having little and getting with much less. I remember hearing of a missionary family that would feed their children on occasion a meal of plain potatoes to teach them how to survive on a simple meal if they ever became missionaries  and eating on leaves instead of plates. They knew if they became missionaries they would have to survive on much less, they did not want to raise discontented consumers but instead desired to raise children that could be content and live on the simple things in life if they would share Jesus with a lost world.

Simpler living can be achieved without the responsibility to the many unneeded items here on earth. We must protect that precious commodity that we can never get back:  TIME! Precious time to do the things we really want to do and share with those we love  because we only live once. Let's not spend it tirelessly taking care of the endless unneeded earthly possessions we own so that we can spend time on the ever important eternal.

~What You Will Need~
-Sharp Scissors
-Beautiful Colored Tissue Paper
-Green Stem Wire or Green Pipe Cleaner
-Green Flower Tape or Satin Ribbon

Cut a few pieces (about 4-6) of tissue paper (crepe paper)
about 8 x 10 inches (the exact size doesn't matter).

Put the paper in a pile and fold it like an accordion.
Cut the edges straight or to add a special touch
scallop the edges prettily. ;)

Tie the center of the folded paper with green stem wire,
green pipe cleaner (or twist tie).

Gently pull each piece of paper towards the top center of the flower,
separating each sheet of paper from the others (forming the petals of the flower).

Homemaking: The Chandelier Hunt

Not too long ago, one of the bulbs sparked in our poor chandelier, blew out and exploded. We have seen very strange things happen with this chandelier since I had picked it up at  a garage sale that makes me think it is not safe to have in our home. So now I am on the hunt for  new lighting to go over our dining room table.

CSN Stores has some pretty things and many of which are economical:

It's just too hard to pick!

When you choose lighting for you home, where is your favorite place to shop at?

The Homemaker's Heart

Don't you love Mondays? A fresh start to a new week with all new endeavors excitingly brimming for the homemaker! What a blessing it is to have our own schedules and tailor our days according to how they will best suit our families and their needs.

Now whether you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, I want you to know that we are all called to be a keeper at home and that every post on this blog is meant for each and every single one of you! Just because you are a stay at home mom doesn't always mean your heart is there and likewise there are many moms who are in a position to have to work and yet their hearts are turned towards and anchored in their homes.

I think what is ultimately important is to remember that whatever category you find yourself in, it is of utmost importance to have your heart in your home.

You can be a stay at home mom and loathe every minute of it and literally be absent in your home by all kinds of means (talking on the phone, always being online, always being gone and driving around town, etc.).  You can grumble and begrudgingly do the housework and feel like it is menial, that you are above it trying to avoid it. You can be with your husband and children and be completely bored wanting to get away and do something else that interests you.

But to have your heart in your home is something completely different. It is being purposefully available as a sacrifice of love.  It is saying 'no' to those things that can pull you away and steal the very best from you. Oftentimes we don't even realize what is best for ourselves until it is too late.  Being a keeper at home is an act of love, and cultivates a heart of servanthood within us which is a valuable, godly trait. It is something to be prayed over,  and is your act or worship to the Lord as you serve with a whole heart and definitely never menial!

It is truly an honor to do these things! So dear friends, take a good look at your heart and critically analyze it to see if you are truly present or absent in your home. If there are things that pull your heart away from home
be sure to do what you can to guard against it.

Don't Be Robbed

Don't be robbed today of the simple joys of life...

Don't be robbed of your home---or angry with those in it, unhappy that things are not going your way or that your husband and children are not how you want them to be. Don't let Satan rob you of your happiness there, making you think that you don't have this or that. Don't compare yourself to others but be grateful for what you have and know they are a gift from the Almighty Himself.

Don't be robbed of your time---don't waste excessive hours with frivolous pursuits such as watching TV, being online, always being away from your home or other idleness that can spring up in a woman's life keeping her from truly caring for the very ones that you love. Guard your time carefully.

Don't be robbed by lies...the world will tell you that  you are wasting your time, that you need to look outside God and your home for true happiness. They will put you on 'their' path and lead you down the wrong paths. Keep yourself immersed in truth at all costs.

Love your children.....

Their smiles, their laughter, their questions, their hugs, their innocence, their smell, their thoughts, their health, their presence, their everything. They are God's gift to you. Care for them and educate them and raise them up in His ways. Enjoy life and share it with them, they are learning about the world through your eyes. What an honor we have been given! You are making memories today---rejoice in your special moments!

Love your husband...

Remember that he is not perfect, he is not  you and thinks differently than you do. He is God's gift to you. Love him in spite of his failings, love him wholeheartedly, extend to him the same measure of love, respect and forgiveness in the strength that has been given to you in Christ Jesus. Do something special for him today. A word of praise or encouragement, a massage, a gift, bake his favorite treat. Most men would die for their women, and we need to love them as our heroes (even when they might feel at their lowest). A noble wife rises up to the occasion to bless her husband with all her heart.

Care for your home...

Only a mother truly knows what is needed in the home. Perhaps the special meal, the socks that need darning, the gesture of love to cheer up a sad heart. Cleaning, decorating, planning, and reading to learn more about homemaking. Busy yourself with these things, and don't think that being home is boring!!!! There is so much to do and your are only limited by your own mind.

We have the blessed opportunity to start the day off as a clean white palette--new, fresh and clean, as we look forward to painting loveliness, creating order and putting our all into the our homes and our families.

Guard yourselves, dear wives and mamas,

from being robbed

and live your life serving

the Lord...

and have it to the full."

Wise Planning for a New Week

I like to do my weekly planning for the week on Sunday night. Last night I was able to plan the entire week and even get some extra Bible reading time in which was the icing on the cake. I was thinking about how I used to plan when I was a younger wife, I would plan in many things that were unnecessary and by the end of the day I was exhausted. My husband would come home and I would have tears of frustration because I had too much on plate that day and he would wonder why. Well one look at my list and it was easy to see why!

Then I read a book about a wife who would try to structure her day around the Bible verse Titus 2:4-6. You know, love your husband, love your children, etc. She would get her planner out and ask God what he would have her to do that week and then write them in (ex: read her Bible daily), then she would think about what her husband would like her to do and she would write those things in  before she got to anything else. Usually our husbands do not demand too much of us. They are happy with the simple things such as a cooked meal, clean clothes and children that are alive when they get home from work!

When I come to think of it, many godly women I know also do this. They put God first, and their husbands right after that, then  they tend to their children's needs, homeschooling, etc. I think this is wise, because it is so easy to ignore our husbands and have the house and children dominate our time and day if we are not careful to make sure we are tending to our husbands needs first.

I also think that planning that way helps us to respect our husbands more. It is reserving a special place for him in our hearts to serve him, this way we also know we are actually DOING it. We can have good intentions, but actually never really do anything with those intentions. So many times we can start the week off running and never think twice about how we can really help our husbands. Then little things might not get done such as ironing his shirts, making his lunch or preparing (timing) his coffee for him before he runs out the door.

Think back with me, ladies. What has your husband been suggesting to you? What things do you notice that you are not doing for him but he has been quietly not saying anything about? Let us tend to our husbands needs for this is how we love our husbands. If he requests nothing but taking care of the children and schooling them, then do it well. If he asks you to help run his business, then make that a priority in your life before everything else you would like to do, knowing that you are serving the Lord wholeheartedly.

Because at the end of the day you want to know you did everything you could to be the best wife possible with your priorities in order! (Well done good and faithful servant....Matt 25:23)

For those of you who are already implementing some of this--

how do you try make your husband a priority?

Defending Biblical Truths in the Face of Adversity and Titus 2 Link-Up

Defending biblical truths are mandatory for this day and age--there is a surreal amount of pressure to walk away from or make light of the scriptures. Titus 2 clearly states that older women are to teach the younger women to love their husbands, love their children, be self controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind and be subjects of their husband so that no one will malign the word of God. The Bible warns that there will be those who will come and teach things that our 'itching' ears want to hear, but we must resist and stand firm on the foundation that will not be shaken.

My favorite mentors have always been the ones who were bold and  unafraid. They were usually the ones who were saying things that were not always 'politically correct', although they were biblically correct and did not try to blend in with what everyone else was doing. They were like trumpets sounding their truths from the rooftops. The voice of truth in the wild jungle of falsehood shining light in the empty darkness. They knew from wisdom what the word of God said and knew we needed to hear it in order for real change to occur in our lives. Sometimes sharing that truth brought a price--but like great heroes of the past, they plowed forth with all their might, their faith unwaivering.

This blog has always been a place that has defended biblical womanhood, taught on the glories of motherhood and encouraged the role of helpmeet and homemaker. I believe it was God using His word, mentors, and even blogs that had sound teaching that helped me to be a better Christian, wife and mother. We need to test all things (1 Thess 5:21) and make sure we are not like infants that are tossed to and fro (Eph 4:14). We will continue to do that zealously for the Lord, and by His grace we will not compromise His Word to fall into the fleeting pressure to conform to the world.

People might not understand why we do these things---sometimes these well-meaning people might be our very own brothers and sisters in Christ, who might also need to hear the truth themselves. Dear friends, while this can be discouraging, I encourage you not to lose heart and cling fast to what you know is true. The truth of God will prevail and will stand even after this world is gone and the scorner and mockers have passed.

Now if you believe in defending biblical truths (in mercy, humility, and in love) and are not afraid or ashamed to stand up for them, please link up below and share a post. You can post about anything regarding biblical womanhood, blessed motherhood, being a helpmeet or homemaker---this is a Titus 2 link up, where we would like to share, defend, encourage the biblical truths on roles regarding women and the Christian family. So please join in and share with thousands of women around the world who desperately need to hear the glories and beauty of Titus 2! I am looking forward to reading your posts!

Just stuff about how I get things done...

I have been pretty good recently at keeping my home in check.  I have got into the habit of writing to-do lists each morning (or jotting things down in the evening for the next day if I can think that far ahead!).  Without a list my life just becomes a messy whirl of forgetfulness.
I have had to take a long hard look at our finances and am actually really pleased that I was put in that position of need.  The result has been new recipes, much more food cooked from scratch, scrumptious home-baked goodies replacing "junk", and a chance for me to earn "perfect housewife" status *grin*.
I sit and make a meal plan for the following week before I order the grocery shop online, asking my family if they have any favourite meal requests.  Some may think that getting our grocery shop delivered is somewhat  a money wasting exercise in itself, but it actually works out much cheaper for our family.  No longer are we able to be tempted by the gorgeous aromas as we pass the bakery counter, gone are the days when our mouths watered at the mere sight of those delicious (but naughty) fresh cream cakes, and the quiet subliminal voices that seemed to echo around the aisles demanding that we buy the trifle/crisps/biscuits/chocolate/jaffa cakes/expensive toilet rolls because the puppy is ultra cute...are safely a thing of the past.  I am now capable of strictly adhering to my list of necessities, without the "oh look, these are on BOGOF, it's a bargain" and ending up buying things we would never ever usually look at.  We can still make good use of any offers available of course, but usually it's things that are useful or usual for us to buy, not just because temptation was put in our way.  Our weekly grocery bill is now down to under £90 most weeks, a huge drop from the old times of £130-150.
The silly thing is we are eating substantially better.  The fruit basket is full, the vegetable trolley is healthy, and we are all feeling better for it.  Joe's skin is looking clearer too.  It could be a mighty coincidence of course but...
This week our meal plan looked like this:
Sunday - Meat joint and vegetables.  We stretched the budget a little this week and went for a leg of lamb as we were expecting my parents to join us - they decided not to - but the lamb was very much enjoyed in their absence.
Monday - Vegetable Lasagne.
Tuesday - Cottage Pie.
Wednesday - Tuna Pasta.
Thursday - Corned Beef Hash with Salad.
Friday - Crock Pot Chilli served with Rice.
Saturday - Pie, Chips and Salad.
All cheap, simple to prepare, and best of all, rather tasty :)
It's funny, because up until the overhaul of our finances and the subsequent backlash of meal planning, I didn't like food.  I have never been a foodie fan.  I only ate because I had to, and could quite happily go throughout the day without one single item of food passing my lips until 5pm.  I didn't feel hungry, and had to remind myself to eat.
Now, if I had to analyse this, I would put it down to the way I was bought up.  I'm not critiscising my mum in anyway, she did what she thought was best and cared about my eating well and gaining good nutrition, but I was one of those "you will sit and clear your plate no matter how long it takes you" children.  Thus food doesn't exactly bring forth good memories for me.  It wasn't just at dinner, I was forced to have breakfast before leaving the house, regardless of my "not hungry" whines, and for lunch? Well,  I remember having to take sandwiches throughout school whilst most of my friends had the yummy looking (and smelling) school dinners.  Often sitting alone,  I used to look at my limp ham or plain ol' cheese sandwich and couldn't bring myself to eat it.  I used to hide it (better that than risk the wrath of the dinnerlady overseeing bin duty!) knowing that my mum would go beserk at me wasting food.  Lunch was the same thing, day in, day out - having a rare bread roll instead of the floppy white bread was sheer luxury.  White bread ham/cheese sandwich, cheap chocolate biscuit, budget priced yoghurt, and an apple or banana.  Even to this day I don't like sandwiches/packed lunches much, no matter what the filling.  Funny how negative feelings towards things in childhood remain with us in adult life.  Well not funny, sad really.  Looking back, of course I should have been thankful that I had food fullstop - but somehow that didn't seem very important as a child, all that was important was that the food on offer was tasty and something I liked...
I'm trying to break through this food negativity with good wholesome (I'll go the whole hogg and say lovingly prepared...) cooking and home-baked bread.  And do you know what?  It's working.  I have breakfast everyday, often eat *something* for lunch (usually fruit or toast with a topping of choice), and I now look forward to dinner.  I actually feel hungry too, something completely new to me.
Another plus point for all this, is that my "finicky eaters" are eating a whole lot better too. At one time Joe would only eat cheese and tomato pizza, pasta, various cereals, chips, and cottage pie as long as it didn't contain onions.  This "choosy" habit stems from when he was around 2 years old.  He was sat at the dinner table eating, and suddenly without warning, was sick all over the table (gross I know, sorry!)   Obviously this triggered something in his mind, perhaps making the connection between food and sickness.  For months after that incident he refused to eat anything other than cheese based foods - pasta and cheese, cheese sandwhiches, cheese on toast, cheese and tomato pizza (only the cheap ones with little topping). He would literally gag on anything else offered, a psychological barrier being well and truly put up and we were struggling to break it down.  We stopped trying.  We didn't force him.  We offered him new things, but alongside his favourites.  Now we are reaping the rewards.   Joe's food repetoire has increased tremendously in this past few months to include chilli, bolognese sauces, various soups and casseroles, vegetable lasagne, various fruits, tuna, salmon, - the list goes on and on.  Tiegan is following suit, taking her cue from Joe.  As a result, both are looking healthier with clearer skin and brighter eyes.  The difference to our lives is pretty incredible really.
The "loving cleaning" phase is still continuing.  What bought it on I do not know, but I do seem to get great pleasure from having a clean and tidy(ish) house. With 4 children at home practically 24/7 I am never going to meet show home standard, nor would I want to.  I believe that a home should feel lived in and be a place where love and laughter is shared.  I don't want to be one of those mums that are constantly cleaning and too busy to enjoy time with her children (yes, this resonates from my childhood memories too sadly).  I manage to get most of the "work" done before the younger 3 children get out of bed.  I'm up at 6am in preparation for Chelsea's paper round, so get through downstairs floor cleaning, first washing load, dishwashing, and often bread and/or dinner preparation before the others rise.  I like that time alone, just able to get on with things with my own thoughts.   I seem to be benefitting from the earlier nights and the early morning starts.  I used to be a real night owl, not crashing out in bed until gone 2am at the earliest, then awaking between 8am and 9am.  Now my days seem longer and more organised, and I like the change.
