With the window seat now a big question mark in the nursery design, I've been thinking of other ways to store books in the nursery that won't take up a lot of floor real estate. There's no shortage of bookcases for kid's rooms out there but the vast majority sit on the floor and are a little more on the bulky side.
I would prefer something I could mount to a wall and that has a much slimmer profile. Books would be stored facing forward so they could be easily identified.
Options include DIY rain gutter bookshelves. Definitely cost effective, easily customizable in terms of length, but maybe not the cutest looking?
I like this option seen over at Sarah Jane Studios using the IKEA Stripa picture frame shelf. Sadly it's been discontinued. Next closest thing available now appears to be the Ribba picture ledge which I think would work just as well.
The white tchotchke shelves from the Container Store would work too.
There's also a series of plate-rack inspired shelves that would work pretty much the same way.
From Martha Stewart. Supposedly a re-purposed plate rack but I can't find plate racks anywhere close to this. In typical Martha fashion, the full tutorial and materials list is included if you wanted to try and DIY it yourself. I love the style of it and I think it would look great built nice and tall. My only concern is that it's ladder-like look might encourage climbing. I don't need to walk into the room and find my little Spider man scaling the walls for his favorite book.
The Catalina magazine rack at Pottery Barn Kids is pretty much the same thing. Currently on sale for $95.00. I'm confused as to why they chose to call this thing a magazine rack. How many kids are really that into periodicals?
Another option from Pottery Barn Kids, the Collector's Shelves could be hung in a series for a library like effect.
I think of all of these, I'm liking the Ribba ledges the best. Yay IKEA!
