Jenny Lind Twin Beds

I have been on the hunt for some Jenny Lind twin beds to refinish ever since I saw this photo.

Jenny Lind Twin Beds

I love the idea of having 2 twin beds in a room and I think I'm leaning that way for Knox's big boy room. The problem is that despite my constant Craig's List stalking, the best I've been able to do is find 1 bed for sale (multiple listings over the last few months, but always just 1 bed.) I'm not totally confident that these old style beds are all made in the exact same dimensions and I would hate to buy one only to later have to hunt down one more in the EXACT same size.

Kmart seems to sell them new and at a decent price but the reviews on quality are terrible.

Nicole took the leap and bought The Land of Nod's version. Problem - they only come in white and, you see, I want them in red because I'm in love with these images:

Yes I realize that is not a Jenny Lind style bed. But all the red spindle-y goodness...I just can't stop thinking about it. And yes, in a robin's egg blue room. I suppose I could paint the Land of Nod beds but I have a problem a. paying $500 PER BED (as if!) and b. still having to do all that work of painting them.

Yesterday my friend Amy texted me with this photo

Yup A PAIR of Jenny Lind twin beds for $30 each at a local thrift store. Don't you love having friends who love to hunt for stuff? She rocks.

But now here's the sad part. What's up with the corners on these beds? Some mean, wood-eating monster has gobbled up the pretty round part on both of them. I want to believe I can fix that and build the corners back up with epoxy or Bondo but it seems like an awfully big chunk. I was hoping to go assess the situation myself today but my baby hates me and is trying to destroy me today and all I want to do is sleep. Maybe tomorrow.

Does anyone have any experience restoring a piece of wood furniture like this? Maybe once I sanded it all down and painted it, the missing chunk would be less noticeable?
