The original love story

Everyone loves a wedding...me maybe more than anyone! I caught the highlights of the royal wedding and ooo'd and aaah'd along with the rest of the world at the pageantry of it all.

But with all the hoopla surrounding the young couple, it's easy to forget the ORIGINAL royal love story - that of the reigning Queen Elizabeth II and her Prince, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

I think like most, I associate the Queen with stodgy dresses and pastel colored hats. Or a very stoic Queen as Annie Leibovitz captured.

But before she was that little old lady in the hats, she was this.

She met her Prince when she was just 13 years old attending the wedding of her cousin (he was 18...scandalous!!). It was love at first sight and the two continued to communicate through letters until they were secretly engaged in 1946 when she was 20. Her father, King George VI, was opposed to her marrying at such a young age but finally gave his permission the following year. The two were married on November 20th, 1947.

Young love is great...but old love is better.
