Things you should know about Vol. 2

You guys seemed to enjoy my last stream-of-consciousness "things you should know about" post so I'm back today with a second installment.  No rhyme or reason really...just stuff I've come across that I want to share.

Have you seen the newest campaign style furniture at World Market?  No it doesn't have the fancy brass pulls we all love but there are some sexy x-legs.  I particularly like this robin's egg beauty.  It's a like Parsons Desk meets campaign with its high gloss finish.  And only $200!!!

A perfectly proportioned corner changing table for those nurseries that are more nook than room.  This is so smart.

I'm always looking for ways to free up drawer space in the kitchen and currently one entire drawer is a zip lock/aluminum foil/plastic wrap jungle.  This little contraption only needs 5 1/4" of clearance and could easy be tucked into a cabinet above some juice glasses.  $9.71 and I've just reclaimed a full drawer of valuable kitchen real estate.  LOVE THAT!

Just the cutest hooded towels I've ever seen.  A viking hat with braids?!  Ridiculous cuteness.

Indian Headress Hooded Towel

There's a whole bunch of new stuff at IKEA worth knowing about.  Rejoice IKEA Expedit fans!  The famous storage powerhouse now comes in high gloss gray and red.

Cribs are back at IKEA (they were recalled for a bit) and this new SUNKVIK in a pretty gray-brown is sure to show up in lots of modern, neutral nurseries.  For $119, you can't beat it!

Remember this post on kitchen utensil organization?  It featured this lovely image using what I'm sure are vintage ironstone pitchers ($$$) to corral various items.

In lieu of a vintage ironstone pitcher collection, the rest of us can use these Sockerart white pitchers from IKEA.  They come in three sizes (6", 8.75", 12") and range in price from $7.99 to $19.99.  That's much more my speed!

Must remember this the next time I'm throwing a party.  Clear balloons, sprinkle some confetti inside, fill with helium. Takes balloons to a whole new level don't ya think?

Can't quite bring yourself to go bold with a dresser paint job?  Try this instead.  Just a peak of color....so fun!

Should I keep doing these stream of consciousness style posts every so often or are they too much randomness crammed into one post?

Restoration Hardware Aviator Chair Knock-off

Do you have a man in your life who's been loving the Restoration Hardware Aviator Chair?  It is certainly "man cave" worthy with its fighter pilot inspired mix of distressed leather and metal.  But the price tag...ugh!

Check out this more affordable version I spotted today on Overstock - $1,000 less!!!

How much fabric do I need to reupholster...

Just a quick post today to share one of my favorite reference guides for fabric yardage and upholstery.   You all know I love to reinvent old pieces with new upholstery but good upholstery labor can be expensive, not to mention the cost of the actual fabric.  So the next time you're considering a Craig's List/thrift store purchase, be sure to check these charts to understand just how much fabric you'll need.

I've created a handy little printable guide that you can keep in your purse for when you're out hunting.  You can download it here.

My caned club chairs and fabric ID help

I have these two chairs that I saved from a thrift store about 4 years ago.  I loved the bright green velvet and caning and at $40 for the pair, I just couldn't leave them behind.

I haven't done anything with them because frankly, the original fabric is in great condition and I really like the color.  The wood and caning could certainly be freshened up though and there is some fading on one of the chair's cushions.

I always thought when the time came that I'd freshen the chairs up with a nice clean coat of white paint and reupholster them in a classic ticking stripe.  Just go all out uber preppy with the caning combination.

But then I saw this image and now I can't get it out of my head! Bergere chairs done in a vibrant lime green ikat.  LOVE!   I'm such a sucker for a bold and modern pattern on a traditional form.

Does anyone out there recognize that fabric?  The closest I've come is this one from Kravet

I can tell it's not the same though (the inspiration chair seems to have more green and less white in the fabric).  I know it's certainly a passable alternative but I'd love to find that actual fabric.  Oh and there's also the fact that the Kravet fabric is $33.50/yard and there's a 15 yard minimum here.  Um...no.  That's not working for me.

Help?  I know my chairs aren't this same style but maybe it could work? Or do you think it will be too much with the caning?

Some things you should know about

I'm in my usual post-Super Bowl Sunday funk - attributable largely to the the approximately 37 pounds of queso I ingested but more specifically because my New England Patriots lost in a HEART WRENCHING game.  Seriously, I still feel sick.  Can't talk about it...ugh.

I need the day to recover.  In the meantime, I'm sharing some of my favorite finds and deals from around the web.

World Market has these great ikat patterned shower curtains right now. Even if you don't need a splash of ikat in your bathroom, the pattern and colors would make for some great throw pillows.  Or you could always try my favorite trick and turn them into window draperies.

I got Knox these shoes last week and he's worn them every day since.  He loves them and I think they're pretty hysterical myself.

Fun, purple drapery panels on sale at ZGallerie for $39.99 (96" length.)

I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of Kirkland's but lately they've become my go-to place for interesting and inexpensive side tables.  Two of my favorites right now (the second one I just used in a nursery inspiration board coming up this week!)

I just got this book for Knox and the illustration are so wonderful, I almost want to put it away for framing.  Each page is a letter of the alphabet with a really fun image to accompany it.  If you don't want to destroy the whole book by framing its pages, the book jacket that accompanies it can be reversed and opened to reveal a colorful alphabet poster that has all 26 letters and their corresponding illustrations.  LOVE.

Say what??  A pinstripe chesterfield at Tuesday Morning of all places?  Crafted right here in North Carolina!

You know I am loving some metal sconces these days. This 3 light fixture in polished nickel is gorgeous for a bathroom and really reasonable at $159.

This room makes me happy.  The cool art on the wall is from here for $99.

I'm kind of obsessed with this vintage Turkish kilim rug on eBay. The colors are just perfect.  It's small (roughly 5'x2.5') but it could look really GREAT to reupholster a bench don't you think?

And lastly, Michael Fassbender.

Period.  End of story.  No additional description required.

Damn you cats!

Remember that blue tufted Chippendale beauty I spotted on Craig's List and asked you all to weigh in on last week?  Well I went to see it this weekend and it is indeed awesome.  The blue is so pretty and the legs would look great in a different colored as you all suggested.

There's just one small problem (or rather a few dozen of the same problem!)  The poor thing has been attacked by cats!  Look at the edge of the seat right at the middle.

And even worse on the arm :(

I don't know why I'm so bothered by this.  I mean I really, REALLY don't need another couch.  But I'd already started to plan all sorts of fabulous lounging activities on this couch y'know?  Trying to tell myself that it's for the best...

Yes or No?

I'm intrigued by this blue leather, Chippendale style tufted couch that I spotted on Craig's List. Is it indeed fabulous or am I being blinded by all the tufts?  Could it look less granny and more Domino with the right pillows?

Caveat Emptor Teva Living

Back in November, I shared with you my discovery of Teva Living - an online retailer with a truly amazing collection of Restoration Hardware lookalike pieces at much more affordable prices.

Since publishing, that post has received a steady stream of comments from Teva Living customers who are having a terrible time getting their orders fulfilled and reporting generally bad customer service.  Many have been waiting months (yes, months!) for their orders to arrive and seem so dismayed by the situation, they aren't confident they will ever receive their merchandise.   I decided to do this follow-up post to alert anyone who had learned of Teva Living from Honey + Fitz and hadn't been back to that original post and seen those comments.

Like all the resources and product highlights I do on this blog, unless I state otherwise (and I will always do so), the opinions I'm sharing are my own and I am not paid to endorse any retailer or product.  I don't claim to know what's going on with this retailer, nor have I done my own independent research into this issue.  I'm just happy that my post has become a place for disappointed customers to connect with one another and hopefully find resolution.

Sadly, maybe those prices were too good to be true after all...

Rock Paper Scissors Glider Transformation Tutorial

I'm on a mission to convince parents-to-be that they don't have to spend $800 on a glider at a baby store just to have a comfortable place to feed their babies.

There are other options!  You can turn almost any upholstered chair into a glider using my tutorial here.

And now Rock Paper Scissors has this AWESOME tutorial on how to turn one of those old 90s style rocking chair gliders into something much more modern.

Those gliders turn up on my local Craig's List all the time for under $25 so between these 2 tutorials, everyone can have a comfortable and stylish spot for those late night feedings!

You need to know about Teva Living

If you're a fan of Restoration Hardware's salvaged wood/industrial/vintage leather look but can't deal with the price tag, today's post is for you!

Teva Living has an incredible assortment of Restoration Hardware look-alikes for HALF the price (sometimes a third of the price!)

This is just a small sampling of what they have.  You HAVE to check it out.  I will be checking Teva Living whenever I see something I like at RH from now on!
